DNR PREDICTS SMALLER DEER HARVEST

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources predicts a smaller deer harvest for the upcoming hunting season. DNR ecologist Keith Warnke says there could be a noteworthy drop in the number of antlerless deer killed by hunters this year. He says there are several reasons why. For one, there are no earn a buck requirements outside of chronic wasting disease zones this year also there are fewer herd control hunting opportunities. Warnke also says fawn production has been below average the past couple of years in northern and central Wisconsin. The corn harvest is also behind, which gives deer a hiding place. Last year, deer hunters in Wisconsin registered around 310,000 antlerless deer and 138,000 antlered bucks. The state’s gun-deer season starts November 21. The bow hunting season started in September.
