HUNTERS VOICE OPPOSITION TO EARLY DEER SEASON
Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 -- 9:54 am Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director
Deer hunters packed a DNR public hearing in Eau Claire last night. Their goal: shoot down an early 16-day gun season.
The DNR has floated the extended hunt as a replacement to “Earn-a-Buck”, an unpopular attempt at reducing the deer herd.
Hunters voiced concern the early-start to the traditional 9-day season would kill off too many deer and further damage the hunting tradition.
Plus, bowhunters don’t like the idea of sharing the woods with their gun-toting counterparts.
The DNR says there were 650 people at five other hearings around the state. Four more will be held.
