CLARK CO. LAUNCHES WI-VINE

Clark County residents will now have quick access to custody information on offenders in the county jail. The Sheriff’s Department launched the VINE service on Monday.

It’s an automated service that notifies registered crime victims and other concerned citizens when offenders are released from jail, and also provides around-the-clock access to offender information either by telephone or use of the Internet…

"It's the ability of victims of any type of crime to be able to check on their offender, or anyone they'd be concerned about returning into the community from our correctional facility, to be notified when this person is released," explains Chief Deputy Jim Backus.

Individuals can sign up on line at vinelink.com, or call 1-888-944-8463.

Those choosing to register for automated notification will be able to register multiple phones and/or e-mail addresses where they will be automatically notified when the offender is released, transferred, or escapes or their status changes.

It’s not just for victims, either. "It's done anonymously. They don't have to have any connection," he says.

The WI-VINE service is funded by a grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice. On top of the benefits for the public, officials also expect it will reduce strain on the jail staff.
