'SMARTBOARDS' GREET STUDENTS AT GRANTON

Chalkboards are a thing of the past in Granton.

As students returned to school Tuesday, they noticed virtually every classroom has a SmartBoard.

"They're an interactive whiteboard," explains K-12 principal Craig Anderson. "It's kind of like taking your computer screen, blowing it up so it's about 5-feet across by about 4-feet tall."

Basically, a computer is connected to a projector, which beams the monitor image on to a touch-sensitive screen.

"Just like you'd double-click with your mouse, you can do that with your finger. You can write on it. The goal is to get kids out of their seats, more active in their own education," Anderson says.

The district eased into the venture, purchasing six a couple years ago.

The staff loved them, and the kids were also impressed.

"People were excited from day 1," he says, "so, this summer, we made a decision we were going to try to do something really proactive."

At the start of school this year, Granton has 19 SmartBoards. The teachers have been given primers, but there will be a learning process. They’ll still have their typical whiteboards to use when the SmartBoard doesn’t make sense.
