21-year-old Tobias Hershberger of Greenwood was killed after 19-year-old Rudy Gingerich, of Greenwood, crashed the vehicle he was driving into a ditch. It happened at around 4:45 p.m. on Sterling Avenue, just north of Century Road, in the Town of Mead.

Hershberger was thrown from the vehicle and killed instantly. Gingerich was also injured.

Chief Deputy Jim Backus says the two young men were Amish. They had parked their buggies in a field and walked to a residence where a man allowed them to drive his vehicle.

It’s unclear if they had previous driving experience.

Gingerich allegedly pleaded with a passerby not to call 9-1-1 and fled for about two hours, before returning to the scene.

Investigators are still exploring possible charges.

This is the fourth fatality of 2009.
