FARMERS' MARKETS GAIN POPULARITY IN CLARK COUNTY
Wednesday, May 18th, 2005 -- 2:04 pm
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

While the weather has been somewhat dismal, the area farmers’ market scene will soon be busy. Larry Eggman of Loyal helps organize some of the markets in Clark County.

"It's all locally grown produce, you're dealing directly with the people that grow it, it's fresher," Eggman raves. "We usually have a pretty good variety."

Currently, there are Saturday morning markets in Neillsville, Thorp and Loyal and a Wednesday afternoon market in Greenwood. Eggman says they are trying to organize Monday afternoon markets in Owen and Abbotsford as well.

Vendors range from large-scale producers to folks that just have some extra homegrown produce.

"Some producers just come once during the summer when they have some extra raspberries or strawberries or green beans," Eggman says. "We have some that come three times and some that come every week."

"There's a large variety of produers big and small."

Eggman says they hope to open during the first weekend in June, but activity will really pick up toward the end of June. The markets run through Halloween.

Senior and food assistance coupons are accepted.
