Assembly Democrats have placed a provision in their version of the state budget that would bar officials from imposing per-head fees on animal slaughterhouses.

Gov. Jim Doyle proposed the slaughterhouse fee for cattle, swine, calves and poultry. Under his budget plan, the revenues would offset inspection costs.

Industry leaders said the fee would put them at a disadvantage with neighboring states. The Joint Finance Committee removed the provision, instead opting for officials to work on a different mechanism.

This week, Rep. Amy Sue Vruwink (D-Milladore) convinced colleagues to specifically ban per-animal fees.
