CITY MOVES TO FIX FAILING SEWER PIPE

A summer street project in Neillsville has been shelved as the city deals with a more pressing matter.

Public Works Director Dave Flynn says he had planned to repave 5th Street from Hewett Street to State Street, but will instead use the money to fix a failing sewer line.

The pipe crosses the Black River near the Grand Avenue Bridge. It’s in bad shape, and a complete failure could lead to raw sewage flowing into the river, killing fish downstream.

Flynn is finalizing an application for stimulus money. The best case scenario would have the Federal Government pick up half of the $400,000 price tag.

The city won’t know if the application is approved until August.
