GROUPS CALL FOR HIGHER TAXES
Tuesday, May 19th, 2009 -- 1:18 pm
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

The call to consider higher taxes to solve Wisconsin's budget shortfall continues to grow.

More than 60 advocacy groups came together Tuesday to argue that cutting the budget without raising taxes will devastate programs helping the poor, those with disabilities and others.

The Wisconsin Council on Children and Families was among those calling for targeted tax increases, rather than just budget cuts, to solve the state's $6.6 billion budget shortfall.

Gov. Jim Doyle has proposed some tax increases, but did not add to them when the shortfall grew by $1.6 billion this month. Doyle and legislative leaders are working in secret on a budget-balancing plan.
