A plane crash near Pittsville has taken the life of the pilot.
A Department of Natural Resources spotter plane crashed in a field in the Wood County town of Cary Wednesday, killing the lone person on board.
The pilot, Heath Van Handel, 36, was flying a "spotter plane," to help ground crews fight grass fires.
The plane crashed about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in a field about six miles southwest of Pittsville.
The FAA says it doesn't know what caused the plane to go down. The National Transportation Safety Board will lead an investigation.
