CUMMINS SHUTS PLANT, SAYS MORE LAYOFFS COMING

A major Neillsville employer will shut a nearby plant and says more layoffs are on the way.

Cummins Emission Solutions announed this week they’re closing their plant in Wautoma by the end of March. 180 employees will be laid off.

Officials says decreased demand made the move necessary. Some production from that plant will be shipped to a different company in Michigan; some production will be spread throughout existing facilities in Wisconsin.

According to the company's website, 800 employees worldwide will be laid off by the end of February. Cummins also plans to freeze salaries for 2009.

Cummins says it’s offering select workers voluntary retirement packages; however, the remainder of the reductions will result from involuntary terminations from operations around the world.
