STATE BANKING ON BIG PAYOUT
Wednesday, January 21st, 2009 -- 2:30 pm Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director
Gov. Jim Doyle's budget director says the federal economic stimulus plan could provide $2.5 billion to help pay for health care and education needs in Wisconsin.
Budget director Dave Schmiedicke says considerably more could be coming for transportation projects and other infrastructure needs.
Wisconsin faces a projected $5.4 billion shortfall by mid-2011.
Without federal help, Schmiedicke says Wisconsin faces "dramatic cuts" to balance the budget.
Legislative budget committee co-chair Rep. Mark Pocan, a Democrat from Madison, says no solution to balancing the budget including raising taxes is being ruled out.
