PSEUDORABIES IN SW WIS. HOG

Wisconsin agriculture officials are calling a meeting of hog farmers and landowners after finding a wild hog they think is infected with pseudorabies.

The virus causes respiratory symptoms in adult hogs and can kill newborn pigs and cause miscarriages or stillbirths in sows. It can be passed through shared food or between pigs in close contact.

The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says the feral hog was 1 of 4 shot in Crawford County during the recent gun deer hunt.

Wildlife officials took blood from 3 of the animals, and an initial screening showed pseudorabies in a sow. The sample was sent to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Iowa for confirmation.

You might remember pseudorabies was found at a couple pig farms in Clark County just last year. They were the first confirmed cases of the disease in Wisconsin in a number of years.
