LEAD-SAFE COURSE OFFERED

The Clark County Housing Authority is offering a lead safe work practices training course.
Executive Director Joan Helm says the training is needed for contractors receiving CCHA monies to work on homes assumed to have lead paint.
Most homes built before 1978 have at least some lead paint.
"I don't want to recommend to people they do their own work on their house if they know it's lead-based paint," Helm says, "It's not a problem if it's under other layers of paint and they're not disturbing it...if dust is flying and people are breathing it, it is hazardous."
Ingesting lead has been shown to cause learning disabilities in children and neurological problems in adults.
The class will be offered on January 12.
"It's a one-day class, 8 hours long. The contractors will be trained on the issues of lead-based paint and how to safely remove it from a home. There are different levels of certification and this is just the first step," she says.
The classes have been popular in the past. Helm recommends carpenters, painters, electricians and others to take the course.
Over 40 contractors have already signed up. If you’d like to participate, you should preregister by December 15th.
