NEW FEE FOR RURAL ADDRESS SIGNS

There will be some changes to Clark County’s Rural Address system.

On Monday, the Planning, Zoning and Solid Waste committee created a $35 fee for the creation of new fire numbers.

"If you have a new residence or you want to building with fire number or E-911 address, you'd continue to submit the application to the Planning and Zoning Department. Beginning January 1, 2009, we'll have to collect a $35 fee," explains
Zoning administrator Steve Kunze.

The process of assigning numbers has become more work-intensive then originally projected.

"That is probably the work that takes up more time than anything else we do (except sanitary permits). We establish the number using GPS. We want to ensure accuracy because, literally, peoples' lives depend on it," he says.

Since being established in the late 1980s, there have been around 11,000 fire numbers established in Clark County; around 200 new numbers are assigned each year.

"Not all of those are undeveloped properties. Sometimes, someone will put up a barn or small business and want a separate fire number," Kunze explains.

Don’t be surprised if you see some different color numbers popping up around the countryside. Some towns are beginning to look at replacing the current signs, which are around 20-years old.

The current signs are red and face the road.

Some towns in other counties have purchased different color signs, or signs that are double-sided and face oncoming traffic.
