32ND BRIGADE PREPARES FOR IRAQ

Orders to send as many as 3,500 Wisconsin National Guard troops overseas will create hardships for their families, but combat overseas is old hat for their division.

The National Guard announced in September the 32nd Infantry Combat Team will deploy to Iraq next year. The brigade has units based in 36 Wisconsin communities with soldiers from around the state.

Neillsville has one of those units.

The brigade has a long history of preparing for war. It was called to active duty in World War I, when it was considered a division, and fought in four campaigns.

During World War II the division fought in the south Pacific and helped occupy Japan. Parts of the division also fought in Europe and North Africa.
