LOCAL PAPERS NOT PRINTED AT ST. POINT PLANT
Monday, August 25th, 2008 -- 11:22 am
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

Gannett Central Wisconsin Media Group announced the closing of a printing facility in Stevens Point last week, but they don't expect it will impact local paper delivery.

Mark Baldwin of the Stevens Point Journal says the print facility was mostly used to print commercial material, not newspapers, although the Stevens Point Journal and the Sunday paper were printed there.

All their printing will now happen in Wausau.

Baldwin says the closing is due to the tough economy and concedes the newspaper industry is changing.

"Absolutely. And it needs to," Baldwin says, "I heard a comment recently that the business model really has changed since the days of Benjamin Franklin."

Baldwin says newspapers have to focus more attention on their on-line products and local reporting.

The plant will close next month.
