CLARK CO. IMPLEMENTS DIVORCE CLASS
Thursday, July 31st, 2008 -- 11:25 am

Parents going through a divorce in Clark County will be required to take a special parenting class beginning next month.

"Children in the Middle is a divorce education program," explains Ron Schmidt, director of Clark County Social Services, "It's intended to teach parents who are divorcing about prominent communication and family issues that can result."

With the divorce rate hovering around 50-percent, more kids are growing up in broken homes--that can cause some problems.

"One of the key issues is blurring of roles where parents will often take on the responsibility of communicating adult information through their child," Schmidt notes, "They may do things such as argue through visition."

That can create conflict for the child, who may feel they must choose an allegiance to one parent.

Clark County is on pace to have around 150 divorces involving children this year.

The course will be taught about once per month.
