THEFT CASES KEEPING DEPUTIES FROM PATROLS

More thefts mean fewer tickets in Clark County.
Sheriff's Department deputies have had to investigate more and more thefts and other non-traffic violations this year, and that's led to a significant drop-off in revenue from traffic citations.
"Year-to-date last year was a total of 1,937 citations issued," explains Sheriff Louis Rosandich, "This year, it's 1,298 citations issued."
That's a difference of 639 citations.
Fewer deputies on the road could lead to increased traffic crashes, plus the county is losing thousands of dollars in revenue from those tickets, Rosandich explains.
The county has experienced a rash of brazen thefts, many targeting copper wires and other salvageable metal.
"Because the metal prices are up so high, they're going into buildings and stealing the copper wire. They'll go into a junkyard and steal parts off a motor. Anything they can to make a buck," Rosandich says.
There have been local reports of thieves entering homes or cabins and ripping the wiring right through the walls.
Rosandich says the thefts are countywide and not specific to rural or urban areas.
