MARSHFIELD P.D. SPREADS WORD ABOUT CELLPHONE BAN
Wednesday, June 11th, 2008 -- 1:42 pm Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director
The Marshfield Police Department is trying to get the word out about a cell phone ordinance that will go into effect on September 1.
The ordinance—one of only a handful of its kind in the country—bans the use of cellular phones while operating a vehicle in the city limits and allows officers to pick up violators.
Police Chief Joe Stroik says hands-free devices can still be used, but drivers must be able to put both hands on the wheel at all times.
Stroik says the ordinance could be a good thing, but time will tell.
"The jury is still is out as to will this work, or won't this work," Stroik acknowledges, "From a safety standpoint only: yes, this is a good idea. It takes away from one of the distractions people may have."
The police department is teaming up with a local cell phone company to hold three information sessions about the ordinance. The first was held Wednesday at the Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry building.
