A Pittsville-area woman charged in an animal neglect case will serve a month in jail.

Darlene Reno, 64, pleaded no contest to four charges of animal mistreatment and one count of providing improper shelter to her dogs.

A judge also ordered her to serve three years of probation, complete 500 hours of community service. When on probation, Reno is not to own more than five dogs and three birds.

The case made headlines when Reno turned over 84 dogs to Wood County officials on March 6.

A humane officer found 77 dogs in a 23-foot-by-17-foot room March 5. They were covered in feces and urine that had collected over time.

Court records show one of the dogs had to be euthanized, two dogs' eyes were removed and another dog's leg was amputated.
