LONGEVITY 101

Friends, family and staff at the Neillsville Retirement Community were celebrating a pair of 101st birthdays Wednesday.

Lila Hubing, formerly of Granton, was born on March 9, 1907; Lillian Meyer of Neillsville was born March 12, 1907.

Both look unbelievable for 101.

Lila"s friends say she"s "sharp as a tack." How does she do it?

"I think you keep busy and think positive and be optimistic," Hubing said.

Think about it. 101 years old. Lila and Lillian were both in their 20s when the Great Depression hit.

"That was something," Hubing remembered, "Boy, I think if we went through another Depression…the young kids now won"t know what to do."

Lila says she didn"t have a special diet. As she puts it, she ate what she wanted. She didn"t smoke. Lila still loves to read, do crossword puzzles and watch TV.

And she stays up-to-date on her current events. She says the World is "in a mess".

Lillian is a bit hard of hearing, but also looks much younger than her 101 years. Her sons, Ron and Dale, were celebrating with her. Ron said his mom was one of 13 kids who grew up on a farm in the Town of Levis. Her secret: hard work.

"Hard work never killed anyone. She"s living proof of that," Ron said, "Time were tough. One time they had a milk check of $1.80-some cents and had to support 13 kids on that. They did a lot of hard work that I attribute to her longevity."

For some perspective: plastic and color photography were invented in 1907, the Ford Model T hit the road in 1908, tuneable radios didn"t hit the market until 1916.
