FLOODPLAIN CHANGES FOR CLARK COUNTY
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 -- 12:17 pm
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in conjunction with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR), will be hosting a Flood Risk Information Open House tonight (Wednesday) at 6:00 p.m. at the Clark County Courthouse

The Open House will provide Clark County residents with an opportunity to review a recently completed preliminary Flood Insurance Study (FIS) and its accompanying preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs).

"We're moving from paper to digital, and we're also moving from a community-specific to a countywide map," explains Cat Langel is with FEMA. "Now we won't have problem for communities that might border an unincorporated area so they can see the greater picture."

And while there are some technical changes to the map, some "lines" have also been moved. Hypothetically, if someone's property wasn't considered to be in a floodplain before, but now is, their lenders may require flood insurance, which can be expensive.

Staff will be on hand to offer the most current information about flood risk, flood insurance, floodplain development regulations, and the process for floodplain mapping within Clark County.

"Maps are used by the counties and municipalities to regulate their floodplain and permit development, and its helpful for individuals so they can see what flood risk they face."

The open house will be tonight at 6 p.m. in the Law Enforcement Training room at the Clark County Courthouse.
