DOYLE SIGNS CABLE TV BILL
Friday, December 21st, 2007 -- 2:33 pm Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director
Gov. Jim Doyle signed into law a bill designed to increase cable competition in the state but not without making changes with his veto.
Doyle says the changes he made before signing the bill on Friday will strengthen consumer protections.
The bill was heavily lobbied by telecommunications giant AT&T. Supporters say it will result in greater competition in the state, more jobs and lower cable rates.
But detractors say competition will only come in larger urban areas and there are no guarantees that rates will go down.
Doyle vetoed language that limited consumer protections and prohibited state agencies from drafting administrative rules governing the new franchise system.
