LA CROSSE DIOCESE HAS NEW BISHOP
Wednesday, March 2nd, 2005 -- 8:10 am
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

The new La Crosse bishop pledged to work with non-Catholic clergy, civic leaders and others to help people in his 19-county diocese. Bishop-elect Jerome Listecki spoke at a Monday night prayer service at Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman in La Crosse. Listecki, who was installed as the diocese's ninth bishop yesterday, talked about the love of Christ during his 10-minute homily at the service. Pope John Paul II appointed Listecki bishop in December, succeeding Raymond Burke, who was named archbishop of St. Louis. Listecki, who grew up on Chicago's southeast side, is both a canon lawyer, who specializes in church law, and a civil attorney. He was ordained in 1975. The pope appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Chicago Archdiocese in 2000. The La Crosse diocese serves more than 200,000 Catholics in 164 parishes in west-central Wisconsin.
