CLARK CO. PSEUDORABIES OUTBREAK PROMPTS MORE CONCERN

Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

This past Spring's pseudorabies outbreak at a couple Clark County pig farms has prompted a number of steps to try to get rid of wild pigs.

The Department of Agriculture's level of concern with feral swine increased significantly after the outbreak because there may have been a link to feral pigs in that case.

Now, the Assembly Rural Affairs Committee will conduct a hearing next week on an Assembly Bill, which would designate feral swine as "harmful wild animals". If enacted it would be illegal to possess, introduce, stock or release feral pigs into the wild.

The Wisconsin Farm Bureau supports the measure, saying feral swine can transmit diseases to domestic swine that could ruin individual farms and the state's entire pork industry.

The public hearing at the State Capitol is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
