NEILLVSILLE SHOPPERS TAKE PART IN SURVEY

A survey of downtown Neillsville shoppers finds there are some things to love and loathe about the city's historic downtown.

Over 200 shoppers completed the survey, which was conducted by Neillsville Improvement Corporation. The surveys were left at a number of downtown businesses between July and August.

Terry Wulff oversaw the project. He said they wanted to see what's working and what needs to be improved.

"What they would like to see in time. What they would use and how much they're using it right now. We accomplished that goal," Wulff says.

The most largely represented age group that filled out the survey were those over the age of 55.

The most common favorite day to shop is Friday, followed by Wednesday and Saturday.

When asked what they liked most about downtown Neillsville, the most common response was the "friendly" atmosphere.

The biggest gripe is limited parking, empty storefronts, dilapidated buildings and a lack of opportunities for teens.

"Some of those are legitimate complaints. There a lot of storefronts that need to be done. There are a lot of stores that could expand their lines," Wulff says.

The survey also asked Neillsville shoppers what they tend to buy out of town. Clothes ranked first followed by movie tickets and shoes.

Wulff says he'll be going over the results with the Downtown Redevelopment committee.
