ELECTION IN GRANTON PITS PLAIN VS. CARAMEL
Friday, November 2nd, 2007 -- 12:23 pm
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

Tuesday is Election Day for Granton elementary students; they have a big decision to make: plain or caramel.

For the third year in a row, the school is staging a mock election.

"(We decided) that come election time, we would debate some specific thing the elementary kids could relate to," explains K-12 principal Craig Anderson-Ruskin. "We've done cookie flavors in the past, we've done ice cream. This year, it was time for popcorn."

Anderson-Ruskin is running as Plain Popcorn; superintendent Rick Rehm is campaigning as Caramel Popcorn.

The two had a debate Thursday.

"Mr. Rehm kind of bribed his way with the kids. He went through the elementary school in the morning campaigning by giving away free samples to the kids," Anderson-Ruskin complains.

But, while it might seem like an easy choice for sugar-loving kids, Anderson is stressing his flexibility—basically, he's the pro-choice candidate.

"I feel pretty good about my chances. With plain popcorn, you have a choice to make. You're not limited by what a manufacturer would put on in terms of toppings."

4-year-old kindergarteners through 5th graders will go to the polls on Tuesday.
