HERR APPOINTED TO NATIONAL DAIRY COMMITTEE

A local dairy farmer will serve a three-year term on a national committee.

Bill Herr of Greenwood was recently nominated to serve on the 36-member U.S. Department of Agriculture's Dairy Promotion and Research Board.

"The intent of the board is to use promotional dollars to promote sale of dairy products throughout the country," Herr explains.

Herr has served a prior term on the board, but wanted another chance to work on some ideas. Specifically, Herr thinks dairy products need to be marketed better overseas.

"It's not just the U.S. market, it's a global market. I think it's very important we stay a part of that and be competitive. Provide products that those countries that are buying dairy products want as part of their diet," Herr says.

"Components of milk are very important. That's probably the way milk will be sold in the future."

Herr notes whey, long thought to be a throw-away byproduct, is now a highly sought protein source.

The board meets around the country several times a year. Herr has been farming since 1970.
