CVTC TO GIVE WELDING A TRY IN NEILLSVILLE

Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

In an effort to find a niche in Neillsville, Chippewa Valley Technical College is starting a new welding program.

"Welding employment, in this region in Wisconsin right now, is hot," notes Joe Hegge, Vice President of Education for CVTC. "It's a job where they can make a living wage and benefit leading to $60- to $70,000."

Hegge concedes things haven't taken off like officials hoped when the city of Neillsville and private donors footed the bill for their new Neillsville facility.

Since opening in late 2004, program offerings here have dwindled.

And the welding program won't be taught at the new facility in the Industrial Park—it will be taught at the Neillsville High School.

"They have a very nice welding facility that allows us to hit the ground running. If we had to rebuild that facility or start from scratch, that would take us much longer," Hegge notes.

CVTC operates a one-year welding program based at their Eau Claire campus.

The program in Neillsville will be taught over 10-12 weeks. Participants will receive a certificate, although CVTC officials hope students could eventually receive a one-year diploma in Neillsville.
