FALL COLOR CHANGE UPON US

The change isn’t dramatic yet, but some area trees are donning their fall colors.
“The maples are really starting to change and turn color – they have some decent color,” explains Clark County DNR forester Chris Schmitz . “Our main color will be coming up in the next few weeks when things cool down.”
Schmitz says the leaves’ change from green to yellow and orange is the result of a change in the leaf’s physical make-up brought on by cooler temperatures and shorter days.
“The shorter days and cooler temperatures help that process. They just pull the chlorophyll out of the leaf – that’s what turns it around,” Schmitz says.
Unfortunately, this year’s weather conditions wouldn’t seem to lend themselves to a vibrant color season.
Experts say there three main factors that lead to a fall with plenty of red hues: late spring precipitation, a summer that’s not too hot and dry and early fall nights that are cool, but not freezing. Of course, we did suffer through a hot and dry summer.
