A 22-year-old man from Tomah faces a charge of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle after a Saturday morning single-vehicle rollover that killed a passenger.

Michael Koll Jr. and Jacob Ortiz, 23, were traveling on the Interstate 90 Entrance 3 on-ramp about 1:30 a.m., when the vehicle hit the guard rail and rolled down the embankment. The vehicle came to rest on its passenger side.

Koll and Ortiz were transported to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, where Ortiz died a short time later. Koll remained in the hospital until late Monday morning.

Koll told police he wasn’t driving the vehicle but a neighbor said she witnessed him climb out the driver’s side window, according to police reports. His blood draw was sent to the State Crime Lab.
