SCHOOL DISTRICT BUDGET APPROVED
Wednesday, August 30th, 2006 -- 8:25 am
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

Neillsville school district residents overwhelmingly gave their approval to a proposed 2006-2007 budget Monday night.

Some of the figures are subject to change due to legislative action, the possible passage of a referendum and changes to property values inside the district.

The approved budget calls for projected overall spending of $10.5-million; $2.7-million of that would be levied against property taxpayers in the district with a projected tax rate between $7.11 - $7.16.

Compared to last year, the overall expenditures of the district would increase about point-seven percent, the levy would increase about 4.7%.

The budget packet also included a list tax rates of schools in the region. Neillsville’s 2005-2006 tax rate of $7.19 per thousand dollars of property was the second lowest in the area – only Cadott Community School’s $6.95 was lower.

The $7.19 mill rate also compares favorably to local schools. Greenwood’s mill rate was $12.90, Granton’s rate was $11.98 and Loyal’s was $8.69.

District resident Bill Elmhorst was the only person to speak against the budget. Acknowledging there wasn’t a lot of “fat” to trim, he noted teachers’ salaries were disproportionate to the average wages of other area residents.

The budget passed on a 17 to 1 vote.

Also last night, the school board voted to keep their salaries the same. The school board president will earn $2,500, the Vice President earns $2,100, the clerk earns $2,300, while the other two members earn $2,100.
