3RD DISTRICT DEMS SQUARE-OFF

U.S. Rep. Ron Kind and his Democratic challenger squared off in a forum at the La Crosse County Democratic Party meeting yesterday.
Chip DeNure said Kind should “pay the political price” for his stance on the war in Iraq.

DeNure, an antiwar candidate, repeatedly blasted Kind for being “on the same page” as President Bush.

It was the first time the two have appeared together as they vie to be the Democrat for the 3rd Congressional District on the November ballot.

Kind said he supported the Iraq resolution because he didn’t think Iraq leader Saddam Hussein would allow weapons inspections without “credible force.”

DeNure also voiced his opinion that the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, may have been nothing more than conspiracy.

He cited omissions and discrepancies from the 9/11 Commission report, and claimed “at least six” hijackers survived. “I am all for reopening the investigation of this great tragedy,” he said.

The two will square off in the Sept. 12 primary. The winner will be on the Nov. 7 ballot against Republican Paul R. Nelson.
