CIVIL WAR VETS TO BE HONORED IN THORP

More than two dozen Civil War veterans will be honored at a Clark County cemetery July fourth because of one man's fortitude.

Steve Klante of Wausau began exploring his family roots and found that his great-great-grandfather was a Civil War veteran.

He found great-great-grandpa Israel Clark survived the Civil War, moved to Thorp and died in 1877 while digging a well. Klante took that information to a local genealogy society and it helped find Clark's tombstone in the Thorp Village Cemetery.

The Veterans Administration office in Wausau agreed to replace the old tombstone.

Then Klante took his story to the local American Legion Post, which decided to replace all 26 old tombstones marking the graves of Civil War vets.

On Tuesday, several hundred people are expected to witness a final salute with full military honors.
