Several Clark County Bodies of Water Added to DNR's Impaired List

-(Marshfield News Herald) State authorities are proposing the addition of Dill Creek and portions of O’Neill Creek, the Poplar River and the Yellow River in Clark County to a list of 751 Wisconsin water bodies considered impaired.

According to the Marshfield News Herald, the proposed additions were recommended for the list because phosphorus levels in the water exceed state standards. High phosphorus levels can result in excess algae and plant growth, which can die, decompose and use up oxygen needed by fish and other aquatic life, Larson said.

The Clark County waterways are part of 192 Wisconsin water bodies proposed to be added to the state’s impaired waters list this year. The federal Clean Water Act requires states to update their lists every two years. Several Clark County water bodies, including Rock Dam Lake and Arbutus Lake, previously were declared impaired waters and will remain on the list this year.

The DNR has been working with Clark County conservationist to identify how much sediment needs to be removed to improve water quality.
