Ruling To Use Diary In Dog-Torture Case Coming Monday

A judge hearing a dog-torture case in Marathon County is expected to decide next week whether excerpts from the defendant's diary will be admissible at trial.

Sean D. Janas, 21, is charged with mistreating an animal and causing its death. The Wausau woman is accused of poisoning and stabbing her boyfriend's dog, a German shepherd-Labrador mix who died in June 2012.

According to the criminal complaint, prosecutors said Janas kept a diary detailing how she hated the dog and saying she hoped it died. The entries include details of forcing the dog to drink bleach and swallow pain pills.

Daily Herald Media reported that defense attorney John Wallace filed a motion arguing that the diary shouldn't be allowed as evidence because it was illegally obtained. Judge Greg Grau is expected to rule on the motion Monday.

The case has attracted attention from across the country. Hundreds of protesters, including some who brought their dogs, marched outside the courthouse last year during an earlier hearing for Janas.
