STANLEY CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTE NEEDS REPAIR

In a move that will likely rekindle some angst over Wisconsin’s decision to purchase the privately-built facility, the State Building Commission this week approved nearly $5-million for repairs and to correct code violations at the 4-year-old Stanley Correctional Institution.

The prison is so far from code compliance that the Department of Corrections has asked the Attorney General's office to investigate if the sellers are liable for misrepresentation.

In a controversial move, Wisconsin paid $87-million to purchase the prison in September 2001. The 1,500-bed facility was developed by Dominion Venture Group, of Edmund Okla. The Department of Corrections has already spent $1 million to provide adequate air handling equipment and fix smaller problems.
