Advisory Council urges Action

A special hunting, fishing and trapping advisory council agrees that the state should spend money to promote such activities but must avoid the political favoritism and secrecy surrounding a previous grant.

The Sporting Heritage Council's discussion of the issue at its Thursday meeting broke down along partisan lines.

One approach favored by Republicans and the executive assistant of the Department of Natural Resources would allow DNR staff to devise a program of small grants issued to a variety of sportsmen's groups. The Democratic-backed proposal would require the GOP-controlled Legislature to publicly revisit a troubled grant program.

The council took a middle road, urging the DNR to develop a grant program and lawmakers to "fix" the current law.
