WATERED-DOWN TPA PASSES ASSEMBLY
Friday, April 28th, 2006 -- 10:10 pm
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

An extremely watered-down version of the Taxpayer Protection Amendment passed the state Assembly.

It took them until 4:30 a.m. Friday morning, but lawmakers narrowly approve a hastily crafted version of the constitutional amendment.

Original versions would have limited state and local spending, but Republicans could only gather enough votes to pass an amendment limiting only state spending.

Under the plan, state spending could increase only according to personal income growth.

Republicans have been struggling to draft a workable amendment for weeks. Earlier versions would have placed similar caps on local government revenue, but the GOP wiped them out during negotiations after midnight.

State Assemblymen Scott Suder of Abbotsford and Terry Musser, both Republicans, voted in favor of the measure, Rep. Amy Sue Vruwink of Milladore voted ‘no’.
