TWO REPUBLICAN SENATORS SAY THEY WON'T SUPPORT TPA

Two Republican state senators – including one from our area - said today they won’t support a constitutional amendment limiting state and local spending; instead, they offered their own measure to cap taxes.

Saying they didn’t think “legislating” through the Constitution was the correct approach, the announcement by senators Sheila Harsdorf of River Falls and Ron Brown of Eau Claire is seen as a major blow to the proposed Taxpayer Protection Act (TPA).

Their “Tax Relief Today” proposal would:
  • Cap local levies at a percentage tied to new construction and inflation
  • Limit overall state spending to growth in personal income statewide
  • And give local government new flexibility to deal with soaring health-care bills
At the same time Assembly Republicans were reportedly meeting to consider ways they could make the TPA stricter. They’re scheduled to debate the measure on April 27. If the Assembly passes the amendment, it would then go to the Senate.

If passed, the measure would again have to be adopted during the next two-year session that begins in January and go to voters in a statewide referendum.
