After finding themselves “outgunned” by criminals, the Clark County Sheriff’s Department has purchased several “long guns”.

Chief Deputy Jim Backus says deputies currently carry a handgun, but receive a fair number of gun-related calls where the perpetrator has a much more powerful weapon.

He estimates sidearms are useful from only 50 yards, where rifles are dangerous from over a mile.

The Sheriff’s Department recently purchased four “D-P-M-S” .223-caliber rifles. They hope to add 8 more over time so their entire on-duty fleet can be equipped with the rifles.
