The Neillsville Warrior Girls Basketball team got a hero’s send-off Wednesday morning.

After practicing for two hours, the girls were honored at an all-school pep rally in the high school fieldhouse.

Coach John Gaier thanked the student body and the community for their support during the girls’ run to their first-ever state tournament.

At the beginning of the tournament, there were 116 Division 3 teams in the state – now, there are only four, Gaier noted to applause.

He challenged the students to cheer loudly – but respectfully – for the team when they play Ozaukee tomorrow morning.

After briefly introducing themselves, the team packed up their things and were give a fire truck escort through town before heading to Madison.

Neillsville High School principal Al Mohr says nearly 1,000 tickets were sold at the school alone. There will be no school in Neillsville tomorrow.
