-At the Lunch-N-Learn session, held by the Neillsville Chamber of Commerce and UW-Extension, attendees heard about Placemaking in a community.

The presentation was given by Chris Straight of West Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission. The WCWRPC is charged with planning for the physical, social, and economic development of the region. It includes Rock, St. Croix, Barron, Dunn, Chippewa, Eau Claire, and Clark Counties.

Placemaking really began to take shape when communities expressed an interest in attracting and retaining new generations or individuals that grew up in the area.

In this case, placemaking would help turn a town, or a section of town, from a place you can’t wait to drive through to a place you don’t want to leave.

By using the Power of 10, which is identifying 10 things to do, 10 places to go, and 10 major destinations to visit in a city, and identifying and enhancing the four attributes of what makes a good place, in this case linkages, use, image, and sociable, they can create an place people want to be.

The purpose in this case would be to use these tools to transform downtown Neillsville into a more economically prosperous entity and have a place for people to gather.
