Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

The man accused of starting a fire that forever changed the downtown Marshfield landscape pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts of arson and one count of first-degree recklessly endangering safety.

Jeremy Van Ert, 26, was originally charged with three counts of arson, three counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety and one count of battery.

Van Ert resided in a downtown apartment when he intentionally started the April 2005 fire that destroyed High Street Salon & Travel building and the Magic Moments Bridal and Formal building.

Authorities originally thought an electric fault caused the fire, but further investigation revealed the fault was actually caused by the fire. The fire caused an estimated $750,000 in damages and left twelve renters without a home.

Van Ert was also charged with two other arsons.
