TALLIES DIFFERENT, RESULTS THE SAME IN NEILLSVILLE SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION

The results of Tuesday’s Neillsville School Board primary election were called into question after an apparent clerical error was discovered.

The problem stemmed from ballots from the Town of Hewett.

According to Clark County election results, 37 registered voters cast ballots in the Town, but only 37 votes were counted. Seeing each voter was to vote for two candidates, the number of votes should be twice the number of voters – or 74 votes.

Superintendent John Gaier tells Central Wisconsin Broadcasting News the votes were canvassed and certified Thursday. While the final tallies changed, the order the five candidates finished did not.

After the first count, seven votes separated Ladd Elmhorst, who was eliminated in the primary, and Carrie Golomski, who moved on. After a review of the ballots, Golomski’s lead over Elmhorst actually grew by one vote.

Under state statute, Elmhorst could demand a recount. Seeing less than ten votes separated he and Golomski, the school district would be obligated to absorb the cost of conducting the recount.
