Road Fee for Frac Sand Companies

-Companies hauling frac sand for processing will be impacted by a new road fee in Wood County.

The road fee that goes into effect Saturday requires companies hauling frac sand to pay the county 13 to 40 cents per ton, per mile, depending on the amount of work the road needs to handle the increased loads. That money would be collected to help pay for damaged roads due to the hauling.

Marshfield officials are seeking state legislation to prevent the county from implementing the fee because they say it unfairly targets a specific industry.

One company, Panther Creek, will maintain its operations in Marshfield but will complete an expansion at its facility near Neillsville because of the fee.

This move will add about four to five jobs at the Neillsville site.

The total fees were calculated for a 10 year period and it will costs the companies millions.
