LOCAL DENTIST CRUSADES AGAINST SODA IN SCHOOLS

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and one Clark County dentist is crusading against soda in school.

"It's not any better than having cigarette machines up there," complains Dr. Tom Gelhaus, a dentist from Owen.

He accuses soda companies of “bribery” – offering contracts worth thousands of dollars to place soda machines in schools.

"You're making money off your kids," Gelhaus says. "It really kind of grinds me. You get these contracts from these soda companies. It's almost like bribe money."

Parents may be shocked to learn many sodas are only slightly less acidic than battery acid.

"Water's around (pH)7, battery acid is around 1 - Pepsi is 2."

Root beer is the least damaging with a pH of 4.8, Gelhaus says.

He encourages parents around the state to contact their school boards and demand soda machines be yanked and replaced with milk machines.
