Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

A historically warm January is in the books. While much of the United States experienced a warmer than normal January, some of the highest temperatures relative to normals were recorded in our neck of the woods.

The National Weather Service in La Crosse, which services much of our listening area, recorded the second warmest January on record.

The average temperature was 31.1 degrees, which was 15.2 degrees above normal, and came in second only to January of 1880, when the average temperature was 32.0 degrees.

The normal average temperature for January in La Crosse is 15.9 degrees.

January 2006 also tied the all time record for the least amount of snow ever to fall in the month of January. Only 1.6 inches of snow fell, which ties 1903 for the all time lowest amount. Monthly snowfall totals extend back to 1884. Normally, La Crosse receives about 12.9 inches of snow in January.
