New, Tougher Grading System for Reading and Math

-About half as many Wisconsin students achieved what amounts to a passing score under a new, tougher grading system applied to reading and math tests.

The state Department of Public Instruction released the new measurement Tuesday.
Only 35.8 percent of students were rated proficient or advanced in reading in the recently completed school year, instead of 81.9 percent. In math, the percentage dropped from 78 percent to 48.1 percent.

The DPI says the change doesn't reflect a difference in students' abilities but rather higher standards for achieving a "proficient" rating, the minimum skill level considered necessary for success later in college or work.

The department also released details about what information will be included in new school report cards being issued in the fall.
